For auction from a recent Kansas estate sale is a marked Nelson McCoy Aqua Butterfly Vase. The second picture should show the mark on the bottom of the vase. It is marked with the NM USA mark which indicates that it is from the late 1930's or 40's. This is according to page 12 of McCoy Pottery, vol. III, by Craig Nissen, Margaret Hanson and Bob Hanson. What research I have been able to do indicates that this design was very popular. It measures approximately 8 1/2" by 4 1/2". Unpacked weight is 2 and 1/2 pounds. As to the condition, Picture #3 shows a rough area at the base, this is NOT a repair. It is a factory flaw as it is all glazed over. Whoever did the smoothing and grinding on this piece must have been having a rough day. Picture #4 shows a clay bump (looks like a pimple) and a spot w the two leaves meet. This spot may be a ding or it might be a glaze pop that "popped". It is small at just under an 1/8th of an inch. Picture #5 shows the inside of the vase. What you see is Not a stain or crack. It is the way the glaze took in that area of the vase. The vase is 70 years old or so. It shows some crazing and t are a few light rub marks at the base and maybe a little at the top. I am not sure that any of the pictures show the crazing, but the rub marks should be visible in the first picture and that is indicative of those that
