Authentic prehistoric stone age implement from Central Viet Nam. Please note that insurance is included in shipping costs. Please read all and see photos before bidding as all tools are offered as originally dug and found. No tools have been altered or repaired in any way. Check out my other listings also. Thank you. I'm no archeologist but I always was fascinated by what can be found in and on theground. I never expected to run across prehistoric materialbut you never knew what you'd find in the mountains, hamlets, rice paddys or jungles of Viet Nam (including Viet Cong!). These are all from my personal collection which I have enjoyed but now, due to old age (mine), am offering for sale on eBay. This item is in my category "B" level. Tool contains chips, small chunks or flakes knocked off and/or heavy wear from use. Good condition overall. It is difficult at times to determine if missing chunks were due to cobbling or useage Please note that in the formation of all stones and rocks, striations sometimes appear. These fault lines are naturally occurring and do not indicate the piece is damaged and/or repaired. They are, however, indicative of weak points in the stone and, if dropped or subjected to abuse, could fracture along these lines. Major striations will be listed in description. ITEM: Genuine Neolithic small axe or club head. 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches. Bevelled blade top and bottom. Polished. Flaked/chipped left side. Blade edge is perfect and sharp. Underside chunk may have occurred during making. T is a possibility that part of the rear handle area had broken off but I am not certain. From Wikipedia: "The term Hoabinhian was first used by archeologists working in North Viet Nam to describe Holocene period archeological assemblages excavated from rock shelters. It has become a common term to describe stone artifact assemblages in Southeast Asia that contain flaked cobble artifacts...(and/or) with certain characteristics" Archeological excavations have been mostly in the Northern part of Viet Nam and includes the early Hoa Binh, Son Vi and Bac Son cultures. Later, around 4000 BC we find the Sa Huynh culture further south around the coastal regions of Qui Nhon. T are no sites listed that I can find in the area these artifacts originally were discovered. These stone implements were found near a mountainous area in Gia Lai Province near the Pleiku region (w I was) of Viet Nam by local farmers as they tilled their land. Although from the same general region, they come from different sites indicated by the color of the stones. While others were buying souvenir jackets and dolls, I also purchased these rocks. T were at least two sites w the majority of these implements were found by the Montagnard tribes people in this region of South Central Viet Nam. One site was in or near a rice field when the farmer was digging down about three yards and came across a grouping. These are white and chalky in texture and appear to have been discards. In another site, located somew in the western mountain region, a grouping was found in the ground, near the surface, which accounts for the unique rust color of the stones. Anyone who served in central Viet Nam remembers the red dirt! At each site the tools were found grouped together with shards and partial pieces, but nothing else. Of course, maybe some of the bombing we did over t played a part in that (only kidding!). The site groupings bare resemblance in form and design. In my research on the internet, I have discovered that these forms are referred to as axe heads or celts which, being ignorant in the matter, will not dispute. However, I find that some of these stones fit nicely in the hand and could have been used simply as scraping and de-fleshing implements.
