Up for your consideration is this awesome rare millefiori paperweight made in East Cambridge, Massachusetts at the New England glass company. The maker is believe to be Francois Pierre. ca 1869.
Measures: 2 3/4" x 2 1/2" The internal design is 4 rows of closed complex cane , a row of daisies with the center date cane. The clarity is excellent. The paperweight is in good condition, considering the age. I have pictured the bottom, t is wear with a couple of flea bites. These are not seen when the paperweight is displayed. T are no cracks or dings. T are no repairs. Please ask questions before bidding. This awesome rare paperweight will be an excellent addition to your glass or paperweight collection!! Estimated S&H: Paperweights are sent priority mail and insurance is required. The weight should be about 2 lbs. This a guess, as I have not packaged the weight to be ship. In the United States, millefiori glass was not produced until 1852 when the New England Glass Company of East Cambridge, Massachusetts, began manufacturing paperweights. In 1853, "Fancy paperweights" were showcased. T were many workers that made the paperweights, but Francois Pierre was most recognized. He worked at Baccarat before arriving in New England in 1849. He brought with he the expertise of creating with millefiori paperweights and lampworking skill. Besides canes of millefiori and silhouettes of animals, the New England factory created date canes made up of white numerals on a deep blue background cane. New England millefiori paperweights followed the motifs of their French predecessors. Open and Closed Concentric rings of millefiori canes, crowns of twisted rods and Scrambled design and mixed up canes. Paperweight production was discontinued at the New England Glass Company about 1874.
