The New Haven Clock Company was originally founded by Hiram Camp around 1850. In addition to making clocks of their own, they subsequently produced movements for the Jerome Clock Company and other Connecticut clock companies. This particular model was listed in their catalog as the DROP OCTAGON #2 and was made around 1880. The distinctive case with it's wedge-shaped bottom (see photograph)was copied by other clockmakers of that era and is much sought-after by present day collectors. Notice the fancy carved 'ears' on each side of the case (see photograph). There is a partial label inside the case from which the name New Haven can still be seen. The case wood has been refinished nicely. There are several minor veneer repairs that don't distract from the look of the lovely case overall. A distinctive of this clock is the fact that it strikes the hours. Most 'chisel' bottoms have time-only mechanisms. The dial is original to the clock and has been professionally repainted. I've seen these priced at well over $600. Our lower price reflects the fact that we bought it from an official of the clock association for a favorable amount. A dandy of a clock for any wall setting.
