Powered by Auction Hawk New Hemp Maneki Neko Motif Japanese NOREN Door Curtain This is a brand new, 100% hemp noren curtain, asa as it's known in Japanese. It features a pair of makeki neko, bekoning cats. The two halves of the design match up perfectly, in the picture it appears they don't because of the movement of the curtain. Maneki neko are said to invite prosperity and good fortune, which is why they're such a common sight in shops , welcoming in the customers. The delightful design also includes other auspicious symbols-a plum blossom, carp and a gourd in soft, soothing shades. The slip of paper tied to the branch is a talisman that has a message written in kanji characters to ward off misfortune and keep the house safe. A lovely noren to keep you smiling and cool this summer and beyond. It's 59" long and 35 1/8" wide and has a wonderful weight to it that allows light to filter through while still lending a sense of privacy. You can see my garden through the fabric, and the glint of sunlight, too. Noren are often used in front of traditional shops in Kyoto to signal that they're open for business and customers are welcome. The sight of one of these blowing gently in the breeze is somehow cooling even in the stickiest summer heat. Kyoto is in a basin, and the summers are notoriously humid, even by Japanese standards!
