GEMMELI-CARERI: VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE 1727 This Italian adventurer Giovanni Francesco Gemelli Careri (1651-1725), a lawyer by profession, was among the first Europeans to tour the world using public transportation; his travels may have inspired Around the World in Eighty Days. Some suspected him of spying for the Vatican on his journey. In June 1693 he embarked for a round-the-world trip lasted until 4 December 1695 . In 1699 his "Around the world" (Giro del Mondo) was published in Naples . 62 PLATES. Bindings slightly rubbed, a very nice set. TOME I: Turkey ; Portrait, frontispiece, + 4 plates (one fold out Pyramid, obelisk, Turkish sultan) TOME II: Persia : 4 plates (of which two are fold outs) YOME III: India 23 plates of fruits, 3 of other subject (one fold out) TOME IV : China : 8 plates, fruits, pagoda's, ceremonial processions TOME V : Philippines : Lacking 2 leaves of the preface and some of the index. 4 plates TOME VI: Nouvelle Espagne 3 large fold outs + 13 other plates. Map of Mexico , exotic fruits, Indians, etc. Value: Giro del mondo Loome booksellers (just click on the link) offer their set in a mixed first and second edition of the Italian edition for 8000$ but with 49 plates, I do not know if t w originally only 49 plates but in my copy t are 62 plates. My copy being the second French edition published in 1727. Single volumes are available at 250$ to 500$. Often incomplete. Of course the total is more then the sum of its parts. 1500$ to start with seems very reasonable to me. HAVE A LOOK AT MY OTHER RARE BOOKS ON VOYAGES ALL PRICED FAR BELOW MARKET VALUE
