Up for auction : New York City Fire Patrol Helmet

This authentic vintage red, Cairns & Brother ,"New Yorker" helmet is the real deal. Manufactured in Clifton , New Jersey .It is made of thick leather and has a heavy cloth lining with ear flaps.It is in very good condition with some paint scratched off . It has the authentic metal Cairns tag affixed to the inside.The front piece is not a Patrol front piece but it is from New York City .The front piece is like new from my collection. This helmet has seen fire duty but is still in great condition.The helmet is size 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 .You will notice that the sections which make up the top of the helmet are slightly different from later Cairns helmets .This vintage design makes it particularly rare and desireable to collectors.

The New York City Fire Patrol goes back in City history to 1803. It was formed to protect and preserve the contents of buildings from fire and water damage. The Patrol worked beside the FDNY since it's beginning.In it's long history ,the men of the Patrol served the people of New York City with pride and honor. In those many years of service the Patrol lost 32 members in the line of duty .Including the Woorster Street collapse , the 23rd street fire and most recently the World Trade Center on Sept. 11,2001.This helmet is particularly unique because at 0800hrs.,Oct. 15 ,2006 the Patrol was dissolved by New York Board of Fire Underwriters. At that time Fire Patrols 1,2,and 3 ,rang their ratchets for the last time. They had a proud tradition , something appreciated and valued by Fire Departments everyw They will especially be missed by the Citizens of New York City.
