I am in the process of selling my NYWF 1939 collection, so this week I am offering a very special piece. It is a huge Belgian hand loomed linen tapestry featuring three of the landmark buildings of the Fair. It is quite beautiful and it is not just a regular souvenir. This tapestry was sold at the Belgium Pavilion, w they sold only very high quality items. It is a licensed piece by the Fair and it reads on the selvage N.Y.W.F. Lic. 839. The tapestry features the Trylon and Perisp in the center and then to the left is the Federal Building and to the right is the Administration Building. Obviously artistic license was taken to display all three in a row. It shows the reflective pool in front of the T & P and rows of trees and people walking around. The pavilions are identified individually and then under the T & P it reads New York World's Fair. The piece is quite large, with the image measuring 51" long X 18" tall, obviously it is bigger since the selvage is covered by the double matting, which is cream and rust to highlight the exquisite, subtle colors of the tapestry. The frame is gold gilded wood and I had it professionally framed, which was quite expensive. It sits behind UV Plexiglas and it has never been exposed to direct light so t is no fading or discoloration. The frame itself is 61" long X 28" tall X 2" thick X 2'' wide. I purchased this tapestry at the Triple Pier Show in the early 90's and it hung in my NY apartment for all those years. This tapestry is featured in the book The World of Tomorrow, the 1939 NYWF by Zim, Lerner and Rolfes. It was also listed for auction at Dargate Auction Gallery, LLC in just fair condition in 2004 and the estimate was $400. It comes from a non smoking house, so it has is no smells of any kind. Unfortunately the frame is damaged in the bottom two corners. This happened when I moved from NY to Miami. It is nothing major, can be easily repaired and does not show much when it is hung. T is a water stain and a tear in the paper backing but this has not affected the tapestry or the museum quality acid free board behind the tapestry. This tapestry is heavy. It weighs 18 lbs and would have to be shipped via UPS ground which would be $50 at most to the West Coast. This is quite a spectacular and very rare work of art. This item is original and vintage and is sold as is. Please ask questions, I will be pleased to provide additional photographs or information upon request. The photographs were very difficult to take due to the size of the piece and the reflection of the flash. Sales are final. No refunds or returns. Paypal payments preferred.
