The playing pieces are intricately sculptured, coated in 24 karat gold and hand-painted with black and ivory enamels. The playing board is framed in rich hardwood, trimmed with accents of ebony black, and held aloft by four Sacred Guardians of the Tomb, masterfully sculptured and coated with gleaming 24 karat gold. Genuine Egyptian hieroglyphics are inscribed on the frame which translates as ''The Chess Set of Tutankhamun.'' The playing field pairs the look of ebony with the glowing richness of rosewood. The Discovery and Symbolism of the Tomb of King Tutankhamen In an isolated valley in the hills behind Dayr al-Bahri, the pharaohs of the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties (1539-1075 B.C.) were entombed. It is known as the Valley of the Kings . However, the kings hopes for secure burial sites were unrealized, for almost immediately the sites were pillaged by grave robbers, lured by the vast treasures buried with the kings. Indeed, of the 60 tombs located in the valley, most of them had been robbed, and many within the generation following the particular pharaoh's death. Only the tomb of the boy king, Tutankhamun had escaped plundering. Howard Carter came to Egypt in 1890 as part of Petrie's expedition. When he arrived little, if anything, was known about Tutankhamun. Yet Carter had noted references to the boy king in his studies of the Valley of the Kings and undertook to find the tomb. Years of excavations at one time interrupted by World War I had produced little results, and in the summer of 1922, Lord Carnarvon decided to terminate the dig. But Carter persuaded his patron to allow one more year and the resulting find proved Carnarvon's decision to be one of the most important in archeological history. On November 25, 1922, Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon, and Carnarvon's daughter entered Tutankhamun's tomb the first people in 3265 years to do so. After the 19th dynasty had condemned Tutankhamun and the other "Amarna kings" and struck them from the royal lists, the site of Tutankhamun's tomb was forgotten. When the tomb of Ramses VI was carved immediately above Tutankhamun's, the boy king's tomb was even further hidden from knowledge.
