Matchlessantiques is offering smiths and collectors this later style M & H Armitage Mousehole Blacksmith Anvil. This anvil features a very clean face with nice clean edges. This anvil looks like a more modern anvil except for the feet. It does not have the word "England" stamped on it, so it would have been made around 1900. According to Richard Postman's book, the mousehole forge began making anvils in the late 1760's. The company had a history of smelting lead and producing cast and wrought iron. Mousehole Forge became one of the most well known anvil makers in England. This anvil's Trademark reads, "M & H, ARMITAGE, MOUSE, HOLE, FORGE, SHEFFIELD, WARRANTED, (mouse image) HOLE, PATENT", and the weight marks read, "1 - 1 - 8" (english stoneweight system for 112 + 28 + 8 or 152 lb). The serial number "23168" is stamped on the front foot. This anvil has NOT been repaired or welded on anyw This anvil has a good rebound and ring. Measurements are: overall length 25", face 3 7/8" x 15", horn 10", hardie hole 1", pritchel hole 5/8", height 11 3/4", base 8 5/8" x 10 1/2", actual weight 146 lbs. This anvil will work well for a seasoned blacksmith or for a beginning blacksmith. It also would make a great addition to your collection. Lower 48 states s/h/i is only $75.00
