These wonderful specimens were collected in Taiwan later than the 1943 trip rather than as originally stated. The woman made her first trip in 1943 but returned 2 other times after that. T are 5 Dead Leaf Butterflies in their disguise position on a branch and one with wings open, (in later a later in years purchased "Riker Mount"box. The Dead leaf butterfly is also know as species Kallima paraletka, members of the family Nymphalidae. Their life cycles depended on this regions Monsoons as well as dry seasons. They are rarely seen now due to the loss of their habitat and so many people collected them for resale or research. Even limited numbers were being found back then and highly researched. This woman was know to have done research for the government on species that were becoming extinct.They disguise themselves very well and pose on a branch and transform their bodies into real leaf look. The males are more distinctly marked with very bold colors ranging from browns, orange and very bright blue. I purchased the one previously listed item and this at same estate. I was told, by the daughter who was the one who wrote only the year on the box, the collector of them, her mother had written the rest but at the time did not think it was important to document such an awesome insect.
