T was a long anticipated Estate Sale in the Boston area recently, with a local loaded old estate that had been untouched in 50 years. I got up early enough to be in the first group to enter. Great antiques of every conceivable kind- and everything covered in 50-80 years of grime! Among the items I purchased froom the basement were a great set of 4 Antique Paint Decorated Firkin Buckets (see last photo for a group shot of all four together). This auction is for one of these Firkins. is a Great Antique WOODEN FIRKIN BUCKET in OLD CREAM-COLORED PAINT with "CUBE SUGAR" painted in Brown on one side . Appears to be c.1920's vintage or tabouts to me. Firkin is 9-5/8" high (not including handle), 10-1/4" wide at the bottom and 9-5/8" wide at the top. Paint decoration has been on for a long time. If you will notice in the group photos shown in my other listings, t was some white paint-like material which was used to white-out the "Cube Sugar" label on the side when I found it- it turns out this whiteout just washed off rather easily revealing the older painted words underneath nicely. T was some of this same white paint sloppily spilled on the top as well which also came off mostly well (A few remnant bits left but will scrape off easily with your fingernails). A chip to wood on bottom rim, but otherwise whole and solid. Handle swings very tightly when lid is on. Great old piece of American Folk Art!
