James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a prolific author. This listing is of a Very Good matching set of 18 novels by Cooper dated from 1861 to 1864 and published by James G. Gregory who got the right to publish from the W. A. Townsend edition which was published from 1859 to 1861 and had 32 volumes. Each volumes is nicely illustrated by F. O. C. Darley with two full page engraving at the front and 9 or 10 in-text head and tail drawings. The volumes are 8vos, 8 inch spines with just under 500 to well over 500pp. each. The novels are as follows: WYANDOTTE; OR THE HUTTED KNOLL, 1863; THE REDSKINS, 1864; THE WAYS OF THE HOUR, 1863; THE WATER WITCH OR SKIMMER OF THE SEAS, 1864; PRECAUTION, 1864, which contains the 1852 47 page discourse on Cooper's life genius and writing by Willaim Cullen Bryant; THE SPY, 1864; THE MONIKINS, 1861; HOME AS FOUND, 1863; WING-AND-WING OR LE FEU-FOLLET, 1863; THE CRATER OR VULCAN'S PEAK, 1864; MERCEDES OF CASTILE, THE VOYAGE TO CATHAY, 1864; MILES WALLINGFORD, 1863; AFLOAT AND ASHORE, 1854; THE HEADSMAN, 1864; THE PIONEERS OR SOURCES OF THE SUSQUEHANNA, 1863; THE PRAIRIE, 1863; SATANSTOE, THE LITTLE PAGE MANUSCRIPTS, 1863; THE OAK OPENINGS OR THE BEE-HUNTER, 1864; BINDINGS: brown wavy cloth with blind stamped designs and beveled boards, gilt figiure of arms on front boards and gilt lettering and designs on spines. (see scans)___________ CONDITION: At least Very Good, binding tight including hinges, texts and illustrations clean and bright, only rare light foxing, only the volume of the novel Crater has has some damage to the overhang cloth at the foot of the spine. ___________ COMMENTS: A crisp solid set with great illustrations and clean white interiiors.Great set for the library and very readable.
