Western Electric type 4-D super heterodyne radio, ca. 1924. These radios are extremely scarce and were built to industrial standards for use in radio stations as broadcast monitors. As you can see in the photographs, this example is in very nice shape throughout, with a chassis that is free of any rust or corrosion and a cabinet that still retains its original finish and the original Western Electric paper label on the underside of the base. T's a small chip in the rear bottom corner of the cabinet (pictured), but otherwise the radio is one of the nicer 4-D's that you're likely to encounter. These radios were workhorses that were used 100 or more hours each week in conditions that were frequently less than optimal, and the few that have survived are typically found in pretty rough shape. This example, on the other hand, has obviously fared quite well. The radio has been tested with an ARBEIII regulated DC power supply and a longwire outdoor antenna, and it still works fine, tuning in plenty of stations both day and night and amplifying them with sufficient volume for either headphones or a loudspeaker. It comes with complete set of good Western Electric 215-A tubes, two of which are NOS in their original boxes. A very nice, very collectable battery set whose build quality is among the best I've seen on any early broadcast receiver. read more
