Beautiful Nippon coralene two-handled footed vase, depicting a bunch of white jonquils or daffodils. This vase is 7" tall and 3" in diameter; from handle to handle, the width is about 4 1/2". It has a ruffled edge and gold enameling and beading around the top and bottom as well as the handles. While the jonquils are clearly white-petaled with yellow centers and green foliage, the background is actually a matte multicolored glaze, like a sunset, with various shades of blue, green, yellow, pink and orange, all blended together to create a lovely realistic effect. The bottom mark is Van Patten's #242 as shown in the eighth photo. T are no chips, cracks or nicks anyw on this piece, and the coralene is nearly 100% intact; t is one small area near the top in the last 1/2" of a leaf that is a little bit "off" (see last photo).... it looks it might have been repaired, or maybe the slip underneath the beading just crackled with age, but t is an unevenness that indicates that something occurred t This area is not visible in a normal display situation (i.e., on a shelf or in a cabinet); I just wanted to photograph the vase in bright daylight so you could see it clearly, and you would not notice it at all unless you are looking very closely. The other thing I would mention for accuracy's sake is the fact that the base of the vase is not perfectly level, it is off by just a millimeter...this just means that the vase wobbles once slightly when you first place it on a flat surface, and then it decides which way it wants to sit! This does not affect the stability of the vase at all and it is so miniscule that you can not even see it. Wear to the gold is very minor, just a bit of fading on the handles, and it looks totally natural. This is one of the nicest small coralene vases I have seen and is in truly excellent condition. Thanks for looking and please email with any questions! Addendum 5/1/08: I have had a number of requests for this figure, so I might as well just tell everyone so you don't have to keep guessing....my reserve for this piece is $850. This is just slightly more than I paid for it, and I know the antiques market is "soft" right now, but as far as I am concerned, that is the best time to buy!!! These coralene pieces are only going to increase in value as they get snapped up by collectors and fewer are released on the market. Now is the best time to invest in quality pieces while you still can!
