The beginning of the Landers, Frary & Clark Co. can be traced back to 1829 in Connecticut, but in the 1890's the trade name Universal became used for the company's products. It was during this time that the company developed a number of new products that helped give this company its reputation as a leader in the housewares field. One of these products was the Universal Bread Maker. During those days, breadmaking was a daily household chore. The Universal Bread Maker came along and made this chore much easier. Bread dough was prepared in the Breadmaker, left in the machine to rise overnight and was ready to bake in the morning. The directions are stamped on the lid: "Put in all liquids first, then flour, turn 3 minutes, raise in pail, after raising turn until dough forms a ball, take off cross piece, lift out dough with kneader." The Universal Bread Maker was a huge help in turning breadmaking into an easier chore and so was successful for the company. This Universal Bread Maker is in excellent condition, normal wear from use and age, but is in excellent condition with all its parts including the clamp read more
