About the Artist: Norman Seldin revisits shore music legends by Jay Lustig/The Star-Ledger Thursday November 20, 2008, 2:50 PM Norman Seldin In his nearly 50-year music career, singer-songwriter-keyboardist "Stormin'" Norman Seldin has been a frontman, a sideman, a manager, a concert promoter and a music instructor. And recently, he has received some overdue recognition. The 2007 book "Local Heroes: The Asbury Park Music Scene," by Anders Martensson and Jorgen Johansson, included a chapter on Seldin. He is also one of the dozens of (mostly less-than-famous) musicians whose names are on the monument that was installed on the Asbury Park boardwalk in 2006. "That was a huge thing for everybody," says Seldin, 61, of West Long Branch. "Those guys that are on t, we're the trench guys." Seldin is stepping out from the trenches with "Asbury Park: Then and Now." The two-CD, 46-track set, released on Seldin's own Ivory International label, includes recordings from throughout his career, and offers shore music fans a rare opportunity to hear legendary groups like The Jaywalkers, The Joyful Noyze (featuring E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons) and The Motifs on CD. Five members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (Clemons, Max Weinberg, Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan and the late Danny Federici) back Seldin on eight 1980 recordings. Other luminaries, such as Southside Johnny, the late Harry Ray (of Ray, Goodman and Brown fame) and drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie also make appearances. Some of the earliest songs feature doo-wop group Barbaroso and the Historians, with Nicky Addeo on lead vocals. Seldin is still working with Addeo, as the keyboardist and music director for Addeo's group, the Nite Owls, who have shows coming up in Secaucus and Allenhurst. Seldin -- who is marketing the album through his website, , and other internet outlets -- began playing in clubs at 13. "I played my own eighth grade graduation dance, with my own band," he says. "The pictures are funny, because everybody in the band had a driver's license, and I was in the eighth grade." He didn't just play, but managed groups, promoted shows and started a small record company. Nightclubs were plentiful, and t was lots of work to go around. "You had The Upstage, and The Student Prince, and The Wonder Bar and Mrs. Jay's," he says. "Convention Hall was rolling. Everything was like a whirlwind. You picked whatever you wanted to hear, and it was t" It was through him, he says, that Springsteen first played with Clemons. "T was a place called the Beacon Manor in Point Pleasant, which was a fancy place. We had the downstairs, and that's w the Joyful Noyze was playing. We had Clarence with us. I guess on three or four occasions, Bruce came and played 30, 40 minutes at a time with us." This was 1969 or 1970, he says. The first version of the E Street Band came together in 1972. "Asbury Park: Then and Now" covers many different types of music, in addition to many decades. Styles range from garage-rock to surf-rock, New Orleans R&B and new age. T is even a classical aria, "Nessun dorma." "Somebody said, 'You can't put that one t,'" Seldin says. "And I said, 'Why can't I? It's my label.' "They said, 'It doesn't fit.' I said, 'Nothing fits on this double CD.'"
