I built the Hawk Mustang when it first appeared in mid-1962, what an improvement it was on the old Airfix A9-A Fool's Paradise IV, and the even worse Revell Millie G. Hawk were justifiably very proud of this kit, which took two years to design and market: it would certainly appear on my list of all-time favourites.Ah, the summer of 1962, my "O"-Level year, and I still have the German exam paper: if any recent graduates in German happen to read this, I would be interested to know how you would cope with this exam, which I took after two years of learning the language. Ask me for a copy.Right, back to the model before I get into full grumpy old man mode: it is more an exercise in nostalgia than an attempt to build an authentic Mustang. You can see from the photos that I have retained the two-tone plated finish and used the kit transfers (I don't like calling them deccles, or deecals, or even daycals). I trimmed the yellowish backing from the USAF and the FF-742, but not from some of the smaller markings. The plated finish has some small blemishes: I covered the leading edges with foil to improve the look and varnished the model with Klear. The rocket tubes are detachable, they probably weren't used post-war, but I wanted the model to imitate the box art.The only moving part is the propeller, which is attached to a small electric motor, read more
