Atherton, William. `Narrative of the Suffering & Defeat of the North-Western Army, Under General Winchester:...` 1842 (1st ed.), Frankfort, KY. 16mo, paper covered boards with calf spine, 152pp. Atherton tells of his journey north through Cincinnati, Piqua, to Ft. Wayne and the massacre at River Raisin in Michigan during the War of 1812. He was captured and adopted by Indians, then ransomed to Detroit, where he was turned over to the British fort there. The prisoners were moved to Quebec and around the lake, and Atherton claims to have heard gun volleys during Perry`s Battle of Lake Erie, as they were in the area at the time. He then describes his release near Plattsburg in 1814 and the journey back. Atherton gives his opinions of the British officers and soldiers, the Indians (he admired their honesty and grit but hated the living conditions), etc. A fair account by an eyewitness. [Howes A366]
