Novelty Cutlery-Cut Throat Straight Razor*SHAVE READY* The Straight Razor Guy This is a terrific and highly collectible straight razor manufactured by the Novelty Cutlery Co., in Canton, Ohio in 1879. If you have a copy of the third edition of 'The Standard Guide To Razors' 'Identifications and Values', take a look at page #150 w you will see this razor valued conservativley at $165. Better yet, the razor in the book has pictures of craft tools and the one offered is adorned with racey pictures of nudes of the period! This is a very well made straight razor and a great example of the better razors available in the late 19th Century. Please read the condition specifics below, check the pictures above and contact me with any questions you may have that remain unanswered. Item condition specifics : Blade -The blade is 5/8th inches wide. It has a clean finish with no rust, oxidation, nicks, pits or cracks. It has a spike point and is made if high carbon steel. Hone wear is minimal and the blade should last for years and years even with daily use if you decide to shave with it. The tang is nicely jimped/fluted for a nice feel and look. Handle/Scales -The handles of this razor are solid brass , layered with the decorative photographs and personalization and finally covered with a clear celluloid, all of which is pinned into place like a fine pocket knife would be. They have a substantial well made feel to them. They are free of warp, chips, cracks or other damage. Pins - The pins are nickel silver and are in good condition. T is no indication that this razor has ever been repinned. Wedge - This razor has an ebony colored wedge that is even and tight between the handles. Box/Coffin - T is no box included with this razor. Action -The blade closes evenly between the scales and the tension is nice and even throughout opening and closing. T is no wobble of the blade between the handles or around the pivot pin. Balance - This razor is heavy in weight and the balance is good. Sharpness *- This razor is * SHAVE READY ! * *The term 'Shave Ready' means something different to each of us so let me define for you what it means to us. If a razor has been listed as 'Shave Ready' it has been honed on two progressively finer grits of Norton stone to establish a proper bevel. It has then been stropped on two progressively finer grits of diamond pasted paddle strops. It has then been stropped on linen and finally lightly stropped on leather. The razor has passed the 'Hanging Hair Test-HHT' which is pretty widely accepted and being acceptably sharp. The item is then shave tested by me to determine if it provides a clean, close comfortable shave. It is then cleaned, sterilized, photographed and listed for sale. If the item passed the above test I list it as 'Shave Ready' and it will only require a light stropping on leather by you prior to it's first use. If the razor did not pass the above test or was not tested, it will be listed as 'Not Shave Ready' . If you need more information, ask me. Packaging- Your razor will be delivered in a box with proper padding to provide for safe arrival. Your razor will not be delivered in a padded envelope which is just asking for problems.
