Thanks & Biography: WILLIAM WESTON (1879-1967) William Percy Weston ARCA, CGP, BCSA, RBA, WGP (1879 - 1967) William P. Weston was an impressionist landscape painter born in London England, who lived in Vancouver Canada from 1909 until his death in 1967. His medium was primarily oil on panel and on canvas, however he has also worked in charcoal, pastel (often combined with charcoal), ink, pencil, chalk, watercolour and linocut. His subjects were almost exclusively the landscape of his home province, British Columbia, with a particular focus on specific named mountains (almost always titled with the exact location on the back) and close-up studies of forest vegetation and lone trees. Rivers and docks are in some of his paintings, but humans or animals almost never. His mature style is influenced by Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, art nouveau, art deco and Japanese pattern design. He graduated from the Putney School of Art (London) and worked as an illustrator. In Vancouver he taught in the public school system from 1910 until retirement ( from teaching) in 1946. He traveled extensively in British Columbia to the locations he later painted. He exhibited his work continuously from 1909 until his death in 1967. These included, numerous shows with the British Columbia Society of Fine Arts (BCSA), the Art Association of Montreal, the Canadian Group of Painters (CGP), The Royal Canadian Academy (RCA) and the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA). In total he was in almost 200 major group and solo shows. The venues included The National Gallery of Canada, The Vancouver art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the CNE (Toronto), Tate (London) and the 1939 New York World's Fair. His work is in numerous private and public collections including the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 1933 he was one of the 28 founding members of the Canadian Group of Painters, the successor to the Group of Seven. He was also a member (and President from 1931 to 1938) of the B.C. Society of Artists, an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy, a member of the Western Group of Painters and was appointed to the Royal Society of Artists (London). He is an important Canadian artist and as such his work is discussed in many books on Canadian art history and in dozens of newspaper and magazine articles. Some examples are: Painting in Canada (1966) by J. Russell Harper, published by the University of Toronto Press; Four Decades (1972) by Paul Duval, published by Clark Irwin & Co. Ltd. ; and From Desolation To Splendour (1977), by Maria Tippett, published by Clarke, Irwin and Company. He is also listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S.
