The greater freedom of action in outdoor pose are so infinitely more stimulating to picture-making than the confined space of the studio. The photographic studies in this photobook capture this atmosp and joie de vivre. Sun bathing in the complete sense, naked sun bathing such as has been symbolized to such perfection in the photographs below, still remains for the million an elusive, puzzling unreality. They cannot pin it down; they can not believe it. It is a chimera. T must be, they argue, a catch in it! People of ordinary flesh and blood can not sun bathe naked, and get away with it! In their bewilderment, they conclude that sunbathing is JUST A BIG BLUFF . What really happens, they whisper, would make pretty hot reading. And thus, themselves forever mentally and physically clothed and covered up, they puzzle their way through a fog of ignorance --- people oddly insulted from truth.I stressed this point as it has important bearing on the photographs contained in this book. Just as the artist with the camera has exerted his art to the utmost and has, as it were, only incidentally used his camera in his quest for truth, so the viewer of the resultant pictures, to extract from them the full flavor, must fundamentally believe in them. Let the viewer, tfore come to an agreement with himself to dismiss from his mind, any private conviction that these photographs are at the best but the fair face of lies; or at the least nothing more than pretty pictures created for themselves alone. Let him for a moment accept them as they are. I most solemnly affirm (and I speak with some knowledge of the nudist movement) that the beautiful photographs displayed are glimpses of the living truth. They are honest windows looking on to the then new movement born of an unstable world --- a movement that, without parallel in history, has captured the serious attention of vast numbers of men and women of sensibilities and intelligence who have sought this new physical nakedness and found in it a new cleanness of spirit, a closer contact with ultimate things. This restored nakedness has released their minds forever from the grubby and confounding things that threatened to swamp their philosophy. By this I do not infer that clothes are fundamentally an encumbrance. Unquestionably, they are second only to food. They only become a menace usurp the function of servant and become master. Clothes, however, for the majority are so much their master - jailor, even - that people become as unconscious of their mastery as they are normally unconscious of the mastery of gravitation itself. Clothes become warping to the mind and bad to the body when given complete mastery. This book, then, might be called "True Freedom." The sun bathers in shown, with one simple, decisive gesture, have found the true freedom and beauty of life that their bodies and minds demand. Clothes for them are but servants. Look at photograph No. 35 --- one of the most beautiful in the book, to my mind. That study, no doubt, is posed --- a careful composition made by the artist with the camera --- but that is unimportant. The truth is that it is representative of woman sleeping naked by an ancient stone bath; sleeping lightly in the mellow sunlight, and as gloriously free and unselfconscious as the faint breeze that caresses her skin. Above all, the desolate sea shore was surely made for nakedness.
