NUN DOLL: Sister of Charity and Christian Instruction of Nevers, France . This approximately 18" vinyl doll was made by the Genuine Nun Doll Company of St. Joseph, Michigan, which ceased operating in 1988. The Sisters of Charity are a French teaching. nursing, and domestic service community It was to this community in Nevers, in Burgundy, that St. Bernadette Soubirous, the visionary of Lourdes, came in her early twenties; she died t in 1879 at age 33. Her incorrupt body lies in a crystal casket in the chapel of the motherhouse in Nevers and to this day is a popular pilgrimage site in central France. Sister is wearing a cotton replica of the order's black full-skirted dress with white headlinens, a white fichu draped across the shoulders and bodice, a black apron whose bib comes up over the fichu, a black veil, complete underclothing, stockings, and black shoes. (This order wore neither a profession cross nor a habit rosary.) This doll is in excellent condition and is from my personal collection.
