NUN Photo~2 Daughters of Charity~ID’D~BloodSisters 1945 In this auction, we are offering a vintage photograph of two nuns who are also blood sisters. The nuns are Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. On the reverse is written: 3/3/45 St Stanislaus & her sister Vincences (sic) Order c/o Maria School 113 Princs Henrickson Rumpen, Holland In 1945, Holland was occupied by the Nazis ......... one wonders about the circumstances surrounding this photograph ....... The religious habit worn by these nuns is so amazing! Their cornetttes are sooooooo wide and HUGE! It is easy to see the reliquary on the sitting Sister’s rosary ....... Both look so solemn .......... Measuring about 5 1⁄4” x 3 1⁄4”, this image is very poignant .......... One can only imagine the wartime experiences of these young nuns ....... At the onset of World War II, Holland declared its neutrality. However, German forces invaded the country in May, 1940 and the Netherlands was under Nazi Occupation until May 5th 1945. The German administration, in line with Nazi racial ideology, regarded the Dutchmen as fellow Aryans; German rule, by comparison, was less oppressive than in occupied Poland. The German occupation was widely resented, although only a minority of Dutchmen would join active resistance. A minority of Dutchmen collaborated with the Germans.
