In this auction, we are offering a Cabinet Card featuring a young nun who was a member of the Daughters of the Holy Ghost in Massachusetts. This is an exceptionally beautiful vintage photograph and is in excellent condition. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Ghost was founded at St. Brienc, Cotes du Nord, France, in December of 1706. A little less than two centuries after the foundation of the Community ~~ during which time they had established missions throughout Europe ~~ a band of the nuns arrived in the United States. In 1902, they established their American mother-house and novitiate in the city of Hartford, Connecticut. The traditional religious habit worn by the nuns of this community was very unique. It was made of white "etamine" (an open meshed worsted cotton) with a white coiffe that was covered by a white veil. A little silver dove, representing the Holy Spirit, was worn around their neck and hung from a black ribbon. A long black mantle was worn when traveling outside of their convent. They first modified their religious habit in 1954. The special work of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit has been education and care of the sick in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Buyer is to pay shipping and handling. Will ship internationally for an added fee. Check out my other items !Be sure to add me to your favorites
