NEAR MINT EXTREMLEY RARE WWII ( WW2 ) 1945 Nuremberg TRIALS International Military Tribunal Ashtray. T his was previously owned by a WWII EX veteran WHO ATTENDED THE TRIALS and who brought it home in 1946 after his tour.APPROX 4 3/4" diameter, bottom is 3 1/2" diameter and is 1 5/8" tall. It was used by members of the tribunal and their officers during the "Trial of the Major War Criminals" in Nurnberg between November 20, 1945 to October 1, 1946 . The first trial charged only the surviving Nazi leaders with war crimes this included Goring , Ribbentrop , and Hess amongst others To account for the war.To commemorate the event the allies authorised the Tribunal Military Personnel Guards to have a distinctive white helmeted Uniform with special war crimes trial insignia shields these very rare items hardley become available selling for several hundreds for the shields and thousands for the helmet. So non military personnel did not feel left out the tribunal also authorised and issued these ashtrays as commemoratives to be used during the trial by court officials and possibley by the charged prisoners themselves. Ive shown in the photos two pictures of the IMT and the distictive Guard uniforms . My researches found one source who stated perhaps less than 100 of these IMT OFFICIAL ASHTRAYS were made and of the two ive seen previously they were badley damaged by the use of cigarettes and cigars as is to be expected. This example is near mint please see photos the ex vet took it as a momemto on the opening weeks of trial and did not use it furthur to keep it for posterity. he stored it well as photos show.It is probably one of the best condition surviving examples . The Trials have been dramatised by hollywood on several occaissions the most recent being THE DOCUDRAMA NUREMBERG starring ALEC BALDWIN which gives a good account of the monumental history of the trials. The item is a true museum quality peice having both rarity and condition going for it . Ive listed this at a realistic start price the last one i saw whent for double this ammount and was in poor condition. it is an excellent display peice I had it surrounded by daggers it looked great and commanded the viewers attention immeidiatley - which is exactly why it was designed in these black red silver colours .It is made out of painted steel , the upper rim is not painted but polished steel i have left this as found the polished stell would buff up to bright shiny if you desire but i have left it alone the peice is in excellent near mint condition please see photos and judge for yourself if condition is your thing i doubt wether you will find a better one available.I am happy to ship worldwide Advanced collectors and Museums of War and Holocaust may contact me furthur with questions if they wish.
