NUTTING STONE, FOUND 19 th C.North of Bodega Bay , California Length: 6 ½” Width: 2 ½” Height: 5” Weight: 4 lbs An insanely cool “nutting stone” foundby a dairy farmer back in the 1800s along the coast north of Bodega Bay . This artifact as well as many others were stored in a ranch outbuilding until the entire lot was purchased. This is a very hard stone with a distinct cup-like concave carved into the top area. Some side pitting and minor abrasion streaks. A “nutting stone” is a term applied to artifacts that have cup-like holes within. The going theory is that these stone tools were used as platforms to crack/crush individual nuts by the prehistoric indigenous population. They are found throughout America . That said, it is possible that other uses exist for these stones. Some scholars have argued for a ceremonial purpose to them, while others say they are simply the result of someone in BC “messing around.” (!) There was a long-lived indigenous population in and around the Russian River and parts south along the coast—until white traders completely messed up the traditional lifestyle of these people. FREE!
