Hello friends, This is a Davis Brothers hand forged NW Coast style woodcarvers hook knife. It is based on designs used by native Northwest carvers for hundreds of years. Hook knives are used in accompaniment with crook knives. The blade on this one most closely conforms to the #10 blade in the blade profile reference that you will find in our store. I have carved with this type of knife for over 25 years, using it on a wide variety of woods and carving styles. Hook knives are used primarily for incising deep cuts both with, and across the grain, and making stop cuts. They are also very useful for some of the fine detail work. The shape of the blade and handle allow the carver to apply more force than with a straight blade. My brother and I are woodcarving artists, and long ago learned to forge and make our own tools. We have made knives for friends family and acquaintances for years, and are now offering them This knife is 8 1/4" long and the blade is 2"long and 1/2" wide at the tang, a medium size blade of this type. It was made in our shop, using high carbon steel. It was forged, shaped, and, then tempered to produce an edge that is both durable and extremely sharp.
