1 pg. autograph document, [circa 1801], Ravenna [Northwest Territory], signed 8 times by Benjamin Tappan, Jr. (1773-1857) Ohio judge, U.S. Senator (introduced bill to establish the Smithsonian Institution), and early settler of the Connecticut Western Reserve in northeastern Ohio. He was one of the first settlers in the Western Reserve and a founder of the Ravenna, Ohio.. This early (now Ohio) document informs the administrator for the Western Reserve [Mr. Phelps] of the list of properties that Tappan's father (i.e., Benjamin Tappan (1741-1831)) owns in the Western Reserve (individually, or in conjunction with others, such as Seth Porter, Samuel Fowler, Ephraim Starr, Thomas Lathrop, and John Worthington) and that the land should be taxed as "3rd rate land" (i.e., a lower rate of tax). Tappan was acting as an agent for his father and a few of the other owners. [This came from some other Western Reserve documents that I owned dated 1801, thus my assumption it is from the same period]. TAPPAN was born in Massachusetts, the second child and oldest son of Benjamin Tappan, a Boston goldsmith, and Sarah (Homes) Tappan, a grandniece of Benjamin Franklin.
