Item for auction is 6.39g full slice of NWA 6386 Diogenite meteorite that was found in North West Africa and purchased out of Erfoud, Morocco in April 2010, with 226g total known weight (TKW) recovered. This meteorite was analyzed by Ray Pickard of Bathurst Observatory, and is a moderately shocked diogenite cataclastic breccia with closely packed clasts. In my opinion, it is probably one of the most beautiful and intriguing diogenites around. Its dense hardness allows a mirror polish on one side. Diogenites originate from deep within the crust of Asteroid 4 Vesta, and are part of the HED (Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite) meteorite group, among 40 distinct members known. Diogenites are composed of igneous rocks of plutonic origin, having solidified slowly enough deep within the crust to form crystals which are larger than in eucrites. These crystals are primarily magnesium-rich orthopyroxene, with small amounts of plagioclase and olivine. Similar material sells for $40/g and more, but the Big Kahuna will start the bidding for this fantastic new diogenite for half of that. This handsome slice can grace your collection in a quality labeled display case, along with a Big Kahuna Meteorites Certificate of Authenticity. Scale cube in photo is 1cm on each side, and not included in sale. Shipping & handling: $2.50 for First Class or $5.50 Priority
