Up for auction is this vintage postcard view of the interior fish hatchery at Mumford New York. This is the Caledonia fish hatchery, the first hatchery built in the United States by Seth Green (March 19, 1817 - 1888) who was a pioneer in fish farming (Pisciculture and Aquaculture). He established the first fish hatchery in the United States in the Town of Caledonia . He was an outdoor enthusiast and ran a fish and game shop in Rochester before conceiving the idea of propagating his own stock of fish. By 1867, he was successfully farming salmon in Caledonia . Later, he expanded his techniques to other species, including shad and trout. Green received many awards for his ideas and developments. The Seth Green Trail in Rochester is named after him. Green has been also credited for inventing the fishing reel. He died, aged 71, in 1888. The next week we will be selling a larger collection of vintage New York State Fish Hatchery and Game Farm historic photos and real photo postcards. Many of the hatcheries are no longer in existence, but were run when the department was run by the Forest Fish and Game commission and old conservation department. The DEC operates 12 fish hatcheries and one fish pathology laboratory. Numerous fish species are reared for stocking into more than 1,200 public waters across the State.
