Toucan Alebrije: Hand carved wood, fanciful toucan from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Alebrijes are whimsical, brightly colored figures designed by artists in the mountains of Southern Mexico, the state of Oaxaca. Artists from several small villages specialize in carving imaginative wood figures from the gnarled branches of the copal tree using machetes and kitchen knives. The copal figures are then sanded by family members and colorfully painted in a style of just this area of Mexico. Full of humor and movement, each piece is a marvel of the artist's imagination. Artist: Efrain Fuentes of the village of San Martin Tilcajete, State of Oaxaca.

These are highly collectible and decorative pieces.
