Very nice shaving mug. Mug depicts a hand drawn Hook & Ladder. This shaving mug is also of a specific H & L , Union Hill H & L Co. No. 1 . The limited amount of research I have done, I believe this company is from Rochester NY. See Mug also has the dates 1860 - 1901. This could refer to the owners time of service with this company, or possibly the dates Union Hill H & L No. 1 was in service. Very unusual for a shaving mug to have the name of the fire company and dates. Mugs usually have the owners name. Another rarity for this mug is that it is painted around the entire mug. Shaving mug has light wear to the bottom rim. The painting of this old H & L is fantastic. The bottom of the mug is marked Leonard - Vienna Austria. These mugs were typically made over seas, then shipped to the United States to be painted per the owners specifications, usually related to their occupation. If you are a firefighting memorabilia collector and wanted to add one fire related shaving mug to your collection, this one would be a great one - (whole circumference painted, fire company identified, dated, & great painting of a very early H & L). Shaving mug is 4.12" High, 4" diameter bottom, 3.75" diameter top. T are no cracks or chips on this shaving mug.

Many firefighting collectors may be like myself, not knowledgable in shaving mugs, and hard to tell the difference between reproductions and real genuine antique shaving mugs. A few years ago, I was privileged to meet Mr. John Sturner an avid shaving mug and fire memorabilia collector. With John's expertise in advising me, I can now tell the difference. I have included two photos of firefighting theme shaving mugs that I was able to purchase from John's collection. They are awesome!!!!! Also in the two photograph's, note the fire theme straight razor.
