The provenance is circumstantial at best, as neither the octant itself or its box have a name, inscription, or initials~~ nor does the Last Will and Testament mention an octant. However one factor leads me to believe that the octant did in fact belong to William John Cavendish Clifford and has been with his Last Will and Testament for the last 124 years:1) William John Cavendish Clifford made Lieutenant ---May 7th 1838.... This is within a year {or so} that Spencer, Browning & Co. made this Octant...This is significant because making Lieutenant {or First Officer} is The period in which Naval personal would have been required and expected to use an octant proficiently.Rear Admiral Sir William John Cavendish Clifford --Baronet.
