Odd, Old, Oak Chair Caning Sample? Teaching? Work Board

's a somewhat odd and interesting antique piece we received recently that came from the loft of an old barn in NH. We're not sure of it's intended purpose as it is a mystery but the details should be helpful for those having interest. First off, the detail that caught our eye was that it is this frame is made of oak and the several pieces of oak necessary to be made are joined with a hidden mortise and tenon type joint. Whomever made it designed it to have 6 opening of somewhat varied shape with drill holes for caning around each of the openings. These holes are about 1/2 scale to the size of what would find if caning a chair seat. T is a round one, a round top tombstone shaped one and a flat top tombstone shaped one (with graduated sides). The other three are square shapes. 5 of the 6 have some degree of caning done with the cane shown being of varied age. The ones that aren't complete do seem to have enough work done so that someone could use it as a guide and then follow the pattern. So we're thinking this was either a teaching aid for someone who taught others to cane, or perhaps someone's own design for helping themselves remember the patterns, starting points, etc. , guess it's remotely possible this was a sample board someone carried around when selling caning services.
