The Oertling Releas-o-matic balance was in use in the 1950s. Its ingenious design allowed the operator to add weights without the need to open the door and let annoying draughts in. By turning the knobs at the sides, ring weights were added mechanically to the beams. A small door on the left allowed the operator to add the sample to the pan. The display at the top shows when the correct balance has been achieved. A light shines through an optical system to project the image on to the display screen. Unfortunately, the lamp holder has been lost in this one, but it would not be difficult to remedy. The transformer for the light is still intact. Dimensions of the balance: height 51 cm, width 52 cm maximum (case 43 cm), 23.5 cm deep. This is a delicate instrument that would need to be transported carefully. The balance is a work of art as well as a piece of scientific memorabilia. Unfortunately, I no longer have anywhere to display it.
