Christina's Smile Children's Dental Clinic is a program that, in cooperation with the PGA and Champions Tour, delivers dental treatment to disadvantaged children at no charge to them, their parents, or identifying agencies. The Surgeon General has called oral disease the "silent epidemic" and showed that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease among the poor. Christina's Smile Dental Clinic has raised awareness of the plight of these children. This year over 2,800 children will receive over $1 million worth of free dental care at 22 scheduled clinics. In 2007, the traveling dental clinic will be moving throughout the nation visiting 21 different locations helping thousands of children in need. On May 29th thru May 31st the traveling clinic will be at the Memorial Tourament in Columbus, Ohio. How do the clinics work? The clinic contains three fully equipped, state-of-the-art dental treatment operatories along with x-ray and sterilization equipment. Since 1990, the program has produced quality comprehensive charitable dental care for over 35,000 children, providing them denistry valued at over $13.5 million. The dentist and their staff, who volunteer, are recruited locally to deliver quality denisty to the underprivileged children from local communities. The children receive cleanings, sealants, fillings, crowns, root canal treatments and extractions, if needed. The children are identified by local charitable agencies. Children may also be referred to community organizations for follow-up care. Additionally, numerous volunteer dentist invite children to their private practices to complete necessary dental care at no charge.
