In the country beyond, a shallow valley cuts through the sand. In its center narrow walls of green emphasize the glitter of the river. It is the Okovango and on its banks Mr. Legendre camped, collecting specimens for the Museum, hunting lions and watching native ceremonies. This fascinating book tells of his unique experience. Legendre and his wife explored the region hunting roan, gemsbok, kudu, impala, and lions. The couple faced many hardships in this waterway desert, from malfunctioning guns and automobiles, to the swamps and sands of the remote region. The Okavango Swamp in Botswana, is the world's largest inland delta. The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that mostly dried up by the earlyHolocene, except for seasonal flooding. Today, theOkovango has no outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert, irrigating 15,000 km² of the desert. Each year some 11 cubic kilometers of water reach the delta. Some of this water reaches further south to Lake Ngami.T are an estimated 200,000 large mammals in and around the Okavango Delta. Many of these animals live in the Delta but the majority move in and out. They leave with the summer rains to find renewed fields of grass to graze on and trees to browse. And then as winter approaches and the countryside dries up they make their way back to swamps . This leads to some of the most incredible sightings as large numbers of prey and predators get squashed into a smaller and smaller area.
