's a nice find! This is a very old, antique piece of redware pottery up for bids without reserve. Incredibly well-preserved, this 19th century salt glazed pitcher is an incredible example of what was once common kitchen utility ware. Somehow this rare item survived the passage of at least 125 years without significant damage. That's quite a feat considering pitchers and pots like these saw heavy usage and were frequently damaged if not destroyed. Most surviving examples of this type of pottery are cracked or have chunks missings. This beautiful pitcher is rare because of the excellent condition it is in....when was the last time you saw one? This one has fabulous green and terra cotta (dark orange) salt glaze with mottling inside and out. The entire interior is coated in glaze but the exterior glaze stops short of the bottom and the underside is unglazed as well. It's applied handle is in perfect shape. The spout, the rim of the opening and the bottom edge are all very nice. The opening rim has only a small spot w the glaze has worn off. This item was found in the basement of an old estate and as the photos show, it is still dusty and even has cobwebs inside from generations of sitting on the floor. You can see some calcium deposits still on the bottom. It also has some blackening on the base which suggests it may have been used to warm up some sort of liquid over an open fire. The house had an open hearth fireplace with trivets so anything's possible. After a little soap and water, this will be even more beautiful than it is in the pictures. Its overall height is 8 1/2 inches; the base diameter is 3 1/2 inches; and the opening is 4 1/2 inches across including the spout. What a nice item to decorate your kitchen, fireplace mantle, country cupboard, shelf, restaurant, etc! Museum quality 19th century redware pottery that sells to the highest bidder regardless of ending price! Winner adds postage. Good luck!
