OLD ALBUM & 1866 CDV PHOTO CHRIST CHURCH ALEXANDRIA, VASuper nice old Carte de Visite photograph album (4.5 x 5.5 x 1.25âe), which contains a RARE 1866 CDV photograph (originally 2.5 x 4.25âe) of the famous Christ Church of Fairfax Parish, in Alexandria, Virginia. This photo of the famous old Church (James Wren, 1764) w George Washington held the first pew, was taken by Seeley & Beale Photographic Artists, 69 King Street, Alexandria, VA. T is much information about the Church printed on the reverse of the CDV (see scan), including the name of the Church Rector in 1866, REV. ROBERT McMURDY DD, LLD. The CDV itself has been severely TRIMMED around the edges (this was often done by the original album owner to facilitate sliding the photo into the album page). The Christ Church CDV is quite nice by itself, but is of particular interest within the context of its providence in the old album included in this lot as follows: --A member of the MEINHARDT FAMILY of Chillicothe, Ohio apparently collected the photographs in this album. NICELY TOLD IN OLD PENCIL on two of the pages of the CDV album, is the story of how in 1863, the matriarch of the Meinhardt family, as a 12-year-old girl was given a special TOUR OF THE HISTORIC CHRIST CHURCH of Alexandria and of its parsonage, by Mrs. T. Marfield, the daughter of the minister, Rev. McMurdy. [Note: the photograph of the parsonage was no longer in the album when acquired and is not included in this lot. The scan below shows a photo of a couple which appears in the album beneath the empty sleeve opening, with written description, that once held the parsonage photograph.] --Included on another page of this old album is an extremely artistic CDV of the âeoetour guideâe Mrs. T. Marfield, daughter of Rector Rev. Robert McMurdy. In the photo she looks down fondly at a young child held in her lap. This c1866 CDV has a nice engraved Camera on the backmark. It was also made by the photographic artists Seeley & Beale, 69 King Street, Alexandria, VA. --T are 8 other CDV and tintype photographs in the album (most of which are shown in the scan below). Some picture members of the OH Meinhardt family or their friends as identified by inscriptions on the photos or on the pages of the old album. Three other empty pages of the album have identification written on them for missing photos (in addition to the missing parsonage photo). Rev. Robert McMurdy was an Episcopal clergyman from Kentucky, and was an EMANCIPATIONIST. About 1849, he opened a school in Maysville, KY. The school was quite famous and attracted pupils from all over the county as well as Kentucky. T were many graduates from this celebrated school. He moved to Northern Virginia during the Civil War in the service of the Government. He was apparently made Rector to replace the Southern Episcopal minister of Christ Church sometime after Union troops occupied Alexandria, Virginia. is an interesting account of the history of Christ Church from the Southern point of view, which entirely excludes Rev. McMurdyâe(tm)s tenure: âeoeOn the 22nd of October 1860, Rev. Cornelius Walker, DD., was chosen rector [of Christ Church] and continued to hold the position âeoede jure,âe till the month of June, 1866, when he resigned. His actual ministry extended only to the time of the occupation of Alexandria by the Federal troops in May, 1861, when with many of his flock, he removed within the Confederate lines. During the war, the military authorities first borrowed, and afterwards forcibly held, the Church, which was finally restored to the lawful vestry on the 2nd of June, 1866. In August of that year, Rev. A. M. Randolph was chosen its minister.âe On 10 February 1866, while officiating at Christ Church, Dr. McMurdy testified to the Joint Committee on Reconstruction about the state of public feeling of the citizens (conquered rebels) in Northern Virginia.
