Antique Victorian Stained Glass Window Set
is a beautiful and classic Victorian double hung window set which was salvaged from an old house in Pittsburgh. These windows are datable to about 1890 - 1910, according to the style of the windows. These windows are in their original sashes or frames. The size of the sashes are: upper sash 22 1/2" wide x 31 1/4" tall, and the lower sash is 22 1/2" wide x 32 1/4" tall. The glass windows without their frames each measure 18" wide x 28" tall. The sash thickness is 1 1/2" (chunky). These windows are very flat, with no bowing. They each have 2 horizontal reinforcement bars, soldered directly to the leading, to hold them tight to their flat plane. The total height of both windows stacked and with sashes overlapping is 62 1/4". The windows are designed in the mid Victorian style. This style was at its height around 1890 - 1910, and at this time in Pittsburgh, the stained glass industry was flourishing, and furnishing almost every home with a few windows. This particular window was probably a bathroom window, designed with maximum privacy + maximum light transmission, and it could function as a double hung window again with the proper installation. It has metal flashing attached to each vertical edge to facillitate the sashes' ease of movement within a jamb. The windows are composed with a pale yellow seedy and reamy cathedral glass in the background. This glass has got great character; with wandering lines and stretched bubbles, just what you would want to see in glass from this era. This was an elegant solution to give privacy to spaces w buildings were close together, and privacy was much in demand. The border is done in a gold and white opalescent glass with a lot of translucency, which is nicely accented with diamonds done in a pale green and pink granite textured glass. The centerpiece is a shield shape of orange and red streaked granite cathedral glass, adorned by leaflike, swirling volutes in various shades of opalescent granite textured glass. Above this motif is a smaller fleur de lis motif, done in the same glass as the centerpiece. The motif of a shield surmounted by simple scrollwork captures the essential spirit of a restrained nobility, which is the hallmark of this style. The lower half of this composition continues the central column downward, and gives added interest with a series of subtle undulations and curves in the leading, terminating in a flourish of paisleys, a reversed heart shape in pink and green granite, and another fleur de lis in deep red and green streaked granite glass. The red glass is actually brighter than how it appears in the photos, due to lack of adequate sunlight. The frames are painted a very pale green on the interior sides and black on the exterior sides, but the green paint is a bit worn in a few spots, revealing a yellow layer underneath. The frames are in good, sound condition, with all corners intact, mortise and tenon construction. On one of the lower corners of the upper sash,(exterior side only) a bit of wood is worn off one corner; just a bit on the edge which wore off with use, not affecting the joint at all. All of the glass is original on the top window. All of the glass is original on the lower window except for 2 border pieces, one background piece, and the red fleur de lis shape. This repair work was professionally done. I was able to find nearly perfect replacement matches for these parts, salvaged from leftovers from other old windows from the same era. All of the glass is now in good shape, with no breaks or cracks. Buyer pays actual charges for shipping plus a packing and crating fee of $40. to cover the cost of the materials needed to safely pack and crate your windows. The windows will be packed in layers of styrofoam sheets and (big)bubble wrap, and custom crated in plywood. Insurance on the shipment is optional, but recommended. Local pickup is welcome and appreciated. Windows are thoroughly described, and thoroughly packed and crated, and are non returnable. Please check my rave reviews o...
