A uction D escription This is a pair of Art Deco Bookends from the mid 1920's, depicting the bust of the legendary writer, author, and playwright, William Shakespeare. These are polychrome, or multi-colored, cold painted, bronze clad pieces made by either Armor or Pompeian Bronze. Both foundries were in existence throughout the deco era and were responsible for creating some of the most valuable and highly sought after bookend pairs. Companies such as these were very few, and they used the costly and time consuming galvanization method for producing their sets, a method that has yet to be duplicated or forged.You will find these pieces to be in very good condition with nothing obscene to mention. The features are all sharp and crisp, right down to the tip of Shakespeare's nose. The metal torso is also intact and free from any breaks, crack, chips, or repairs. The paint has aged as one would expect but still possesses its iridescent quality, which sets these pieces apart and makes them rarer than the monochrome variety found in Kuritzky's bookend reference guide. In the Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends, the set is described as rare and is valued accordingly.
