Baltimore Steam Packet Company (Old Bay Line) Plate

Seaboard Air Line Railway

ca. 1928 - 1930

Up for auction is a neat bit of history related to Chesapeake Bay and the old steamship/railroad days. This is a bread plate with an ivory body (approx. 6-1/2" in diameter) topmarked with the "Old Bay Line" logo in a brown color. This pattern is documented in Luckin's Dining on Rails p. 241, and p. 414 w it is given a 3-star rarity ranking. The logo is very clear and detailed, with a "B" in a flag that has ropes on it and "service since 1840" below it. This plate is in super condition - it has no chips, no cracks, very minor utensil ware, the usual manufacturing marks on the back and a great glaze shine. The body is ivory. This plate was manufactured for the Old Bay Line by Lamberton Scammell - the "Ivory Lamberton" above the crown/S/wreath logo with "Scammell" below is the maker's backstamp from 1928 - ca. 1930. Please see the pictures and e-mail me with questions.

The Seaboard Air Line Railway soon after its organization in 1900 took over ownership of the Baltimore Steam Packet Company (nicknamed "Old Bay Line"). Passenger ships of the Old Bay Line prior to World War II were: "Alabama", "Georgia", "Florida", "Virginia", "Tennessee", "State of Maryland", "State of Virginia" and "President Warfield". The Old Bay Line's competitor, the Chesapeake Steamship Company, was merged into the Baltimore Steam Packet Company in 1941 and the railroad owners of the resulting entity included Seaboard Air Line Railway (1/2), Southern Railway (1/3) and Atlantic Coast Railway (1/6). Passenger service on the Old Bay Line was discontinued on Labor Day in 1961, and the company ceased operations on April 13, 1962.

Shipping is $4.60 priority mail to a US address. International bidders (UK, Europe, Australia) ok and I'll charge actual shipping to your address. I accept PayPal or money orders, and would appreciate receiving payment within 7 days of auction end. Returns accepted (see below). I recommend insurance ($1.65 extra) as I'm not responsible for damage in transit.

Thank you for looking at my auction!
