This auction is for a very old Northwest Coast Bering Sea Eskimo needlecase set found in the early 1930's in Shishmaref, AK. It comes with the 3 ivory pieces and the 2 pieces of very old hide. The largest piece which is the case measures just over 2 1/4 inches long by just under 1 1/4 inches wide at it's widest by just over 1/2 inch thick at it's thickest. T is a 1/4 by 1 mm piece missing from the thin end of the needlecase due to it's very old age at least 200 years old. The long thin ivory piece that came with it measures just under 2 1/4 inches long by just under 1/2 inch wide at it's widest. It has an etching on it of 2 vertical lines with 3 lines coming out of them. It looks like a fish tail. The next ivory piece looks like a tooth. It measures almost 3/4 inches long by almost 3/4 inches wide and has a piece of old dried hide going through a hole at the top. All of these items were connected by the same piece of hide at one time which still fits together like a puzzle. The ivory pieces have a beautiful old and dark patina. This item displays well and would compliment any collection. It's another from the large collection of Native American Art and Artifacts of my late father in law who began collecting early in his childhood. As an adult he became a teacher and used his summers off to pursue his collecting. He lived and taught school in Alaska for many years before retiring home. He passed away in 2002. Please email me with questions regarding this item.
