Antique Cantagalli PlaqueItalian Glazed Terracotta Sculptural Tile Beautiful sculptural glazed terracotta plaque made by the well-known Italian ceramics firm, Cantagalli, and dating to the very late 19th or early 20th century. This piece is signed under the base with Cantagalli's famous painted cockerel or rooster mark, and also on the back with an impressed cockerel and the impressed mark which reads: CANTAGALLIFIRENZE (Please see photos). This plaque measures 11" x 8.25" x 2.25" and depicts the Madonna with the Christ Child in her lap. The scene is sculpted in three dimensions and of the highest quality.I believe this piece was made during the 1920s or possibly earlier (1895 - 1920), judging from the factory marks and the style of the piece. The figures are glazed in a creamy white and the background features a pure blue sky, with flowers and leaves on the lower half. The manner in which the flowers and figures are depicted show the influences of the Secessionist - Art Deco period, as well as the flowing lines that were used a bit earlier during the Art Nouveau period. The sculptural qualities, the glazes, and the expressions on the subjects faces are very elegant and beautiful. The Cantagalli factory in Italy is famous for its wonderful ceramics and this piece is a fine and rare example.
