Outstanding example of wood-fired Southern folk art pottery by South Carolina potter Gary Dexter from Vaucluse, SC in the former Old Edgefield District. I've decided to market some of my better pieces in auctions so you may buy with confidence from the maker, with no middle man or woman.
I am a folk potter producing pottery in the manner of the Old Edgefield District of South Carolina. I dig my clay from the banks of the Savannah River. My pots are then fashioned into traditional forms and dipped into an alkaline glaze. I fire all of my work in an authentic wood-fired groundhog kiln for about 2 days. I operate groundhog kilns in Augusta, GA and Vaucluse, SC. It is a lot of work, just like it was 200 years ago! I take pride in being part of the long line of traditional Old Edgefield District potters from South Carolina and the only living potter from this area making authentic Old Edgefield pottery. I use no short-cuts in manufacturing my pottery. Up for auction is a great looking alkaline glazed Old Edgefield jug with a poem. The inscribed poem reads, " Keep your silver and you're gold. I'll take a jug of rye 8 years old" . The jug has a double collared lip and a grooved strap handle. A combination of southern earth, fire, and water; it has that drippy, greenish-brown classic Old Edgefield glaze. It is approx. 10" high by 5-1/2" wide, about 1 gallon. The piece is stamped on the back below the handle with the DEXTER MAKER and signed on the bottom as shown in photo. This jug is just as it came from the kiln, with no flaws. Since it is wood-fired, the glaze has small, insignificant variations on the surface which add character and are to be expected. A super example of the Old Edgefield-style pottery and a great addition for your collection!!!
