The Item you are viewing is a very nice old Hopi Style kachina Doll. I believe it was made in the 1920's-1940's. This doll has been hand crafted out of cottonwood, the surface of the doll has a nice patina and the patterns are beautifully painted. The Doll measures 9" tall, including the ears, It is 3" wide from front to back and side to side. The doll has signs of wear and also 3 hairline cracks in the front, t is a smal chip on the beak and on the left ear. The right ear looks like it has been broken off and reglued, (hardly noticable). This kachina is truly a work of art and would make the perfect addition to anyones Kachina Doll collection or native american art collection. About the Hawk Kachina: Heru, The Hawk God was the ancient symbol for wisdom in action. The hawk's powerful eyesight, it's ability to see the big picture from above, combined with its ability to pinpoint small often hidden prey, made it the ideal symbol for Heru. The word hero is derived from the name of Heru, and a Hero is nothing more than a majestic example of focused Intent in Action. The action syllable 'er' is derived from the sound made by the flying hawk's wings. In English, adding the 'er' sound holds the power to transform; Give becomes Giver. Work becomes Worker. Teach becomes Teacher, all by adding the spirit of hawk to our deeds.
