OLD, AUTHENTIC AND USED

VERY ENIGMATIC *** CARVED WOODEN RITUAL DANCING DOLLS ***

from North India or South Nepal, possibly Sattar or Santal Tribes.

These very mystic Sculptures have been used by the tribal groups and subgroups of Santal or Sattar which are settling in still remote areas in the bordering area of India and Nepal. They have been placed into the local village shrines or temples. The exact ritual background still remains unknown, but it seems to remember ritual dancing performances, which are related to local religious beliefs.

This fine carving consists of hardwood and shows ten stylized carved female figures with breasts and stylized faces, which stand side by side with moveable arms. The bodies are covered with cloth fragments, most of them are multicoloured old printed cotton fabric straps . The item shows an overall deep darkened partially glossy patina due to use and age.

Condition: superb aged condition, good surface patina, signs of age and use.

Age: around mid to late 20th century.

Size: Length 34.5 cm. Height 15.8 cm.
