Up for auction is a beautifully woven sweetgrass and ash Indian basket set created by a talented artist from one of the Eastern Woodland Indian tribes, probably from the New England area. The outer basket has a pair of braided sweetgrass handles, and on the inside you'll find an array of miniature notions baskets, including a thimble holder and a scissors sheath. This is a set of finely woven baskets and would have been advertised to hold a tourist lady's sewing implements. The weaver used delicate strands of sweetgrass over very thin ash splints. And this is an old set, probably from the 1920's or 1930's. The sweetgrass has developed a nice patina. T are still subtle traces of old deep green dyes visible on the splints. A beautiful old basket set!

The outer basket measures 10" in diameter and 2" deep, and the thimble basket is very small, measuring just 1" in diameter and 1¼" tall. The scissors holder is about 3" long without the top loops, and the pincushion and little notions basket are both about 2" across. T is some damage, the most noticable being a serious break along the side of the top of the big basket (visible in one of the photos.) And the scissor basket has breaks as well, but despite these flaws, this old set of baskets displays beautifully and will make a very nice addition to a collection of antique Indian baskets or sewing notions.
