You are bidding on a very fine old and rare Mexican inlaid wood jewelry chest. Age could be anyw from 1940s back to 1920s or earlier. We have not seen an example of one of these chests for many years. This chest is a smaller version of the Spanish Colonial chest-on-stand or campaign chest. These were usually used as jewelry chests. (Imagine this filled with great old Mexican jewelry.) Workmanship is of best Mexican quality. This came from a Denver estate with Mexican and southwestern items that we are in the process of listing. The body of the chest and the stand are all hand made. After the chest and the stand were made, cutouts of various exotic woods were inlaid onto the chest and the stand. The inlay goes around all four sides. The chest rests on the stand and can be removed. T are no locks. The chest has a piano hinge which is probably a later replacement. T is some slight separation at the corners of the chest from age. This could easily be filled, but we prefer to leave it alone. Both pieces are sound and strong. T is no "wiggle." None of the inlay is loose. T are a few bumps and scratches from age, nothing major. T is also a very narrow strip of wood missing on the front of the chest along the edge of the opening.
